Gbarnga, Bong County

Residents of People street community in Gbarnga city now have some respect following the city authorities’ move to clear what was regarded as Bong County’s largest garbage site.

Bong County’s Assistant Superintendent for Development, Anthony Sheriff, ordered the People street dumpsite cleared when he visited the area Monday.

Over the years, unbearable stench stemming from the landfill had grown exponentially making the surrounding communities fear possible health hazards it posed.

Residents of the community had for long petitioned the leadership of Bong County to relocate or clear the dumpsite but to no avail.

Speaking to FrontPageAfrica Wednesday, some of the residents nearer the former dumpsite said they were relieved for the disposal of the area.

“I am happy with the leadership of Bong County for coming to our rescue. We can now breathe fresh air,” said a vividly elated Jonathan Scott, resident of the area.

He said that although the disgusting order was yet to be fully wiped out, the community was at last free from air pollution. “I least things have improved as compared to what we experienced when the garbage had not been cleared,” he said.

Deborah NaeGoma, another resident, said she initially had no qualms about the garbage despite the popular agitation for its removal.

The acting mayor of Gbarnga, Toe Wah, has already announced plans to turn the former dumpsite into a public park in line with the city’s master plan.

According to city officials, the People street dumpsite that was inherited from previous regimes was put up without any prior planning. “Previous administrations of the county allowed the dumpsite to pile up without taking any measure to stop it from rising,” he said.

Wah said plans are underway to build a permanent landfill in Gbarnga city that is due for completion within two years.

‘Dumpsite will be relocated’

Wah told a FrontPageAfrica reporter that the dumpsite will be relocated. He said the new dumpsite would not cause any threat to nearby residents and will pose no environmental danger as it will be far away from water sources.

“Because of the distance and the fuel we use in the machines, we decided to increase the monthly bill for collecting and disposing of garbage,” Wah said. “The new dumpsite will be far from the community and will pose no danger to community residents.”

Wah stated that they sort out the collected garbage that is then dumped separately due to diverse decomposition levels, for instance, electronic waste that takes long to decompose.

“E-Waste referred discarded computers, electronic office equipment, electronic entertainment equipment, mobile phones and other home appliances including televisions and generators,” Wah told FrontPageAfrica.
